Ethereum Sharding Explained: The Scaling Roadmap

Ethereum is transitioning through a multi-stage upgrade path designed to improve security, scalability, and efficiency. One of the central pillars of this scaling roadmap is sharding, specifically Danksharding.
Rather than partitioning the database directly, modern Ethereum scaling focuses on data availability layers designed to make Layer 2 rollups extremely cheap and efficient.
Rollups vs. Mainnet
Layer 2 rollups process transactions off-chain and submit bundled proofs back to the Ethereum mainnet. Sharding provides the 'data blobs' needed to store these proofs at a fraction of the gas cost, dramatically lowering transactions fees for end users.
